About
Art the Great
Art Powell aka Art The Great (ATG) is a music producer and songwriter who has created works for recording labels—Sony, Elektra, Atlantic, Motown, Warner Bros., and A&M Records; several of his works have hit the Billboard charts.
ATG began his formal music education as a high school student at Washington, DC's Duke Ellington School of the Arts—where he majored in percussion. At Duke Ellington, Art received solid artistic training along with fellow classmates: recording artist Me'shell Ndegeocello, opera singer Denyce Graves, and comedian/ actor Dave Chappelle—among other renowned artists.
He performed in several bands over a number of years—during which time he toured internationally as a drummer/programmer, broadened his music production skills, and co-founded and operated (with his twin brother Scott) Dem Twinzz Productions.
Art has collaborated and continues to work with noted vocalists, songwriters, and bands of independent and major labels. He’s also created music tracks for TV and film—including an episode of CBS’s NYC 22, internationally distributed 4Real, and FOX-TV’s America’s Most Wanted. His work largely comprises a music catalog for Discovery Communications and has appeared in the docu-drama Family Motel and the awarding-winning documentary Bouncing Cats, narrated by Common and featuring interviews with and music by will.i.am, Mos Def, and K’Naan.

The song "Freedom" that ATG produced in 2022 was selected as the official theme song of the 4th Annual Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival.

In 2024, ATG composed the musical score for the original play "NOIR" by director and playwright Mel Burwell.
Art The Great's extensive background in the music industry contributes greatly to his high quality production in nearly all genres of music.

ATG releases his music via his Midtown Road Music label.
